Last weekend, an intrepid band of juniors made the trip down to the Calgary Winter Club to compete in the 2018 Alberta Junior Closed Championships. They had great success with Mohammed Elserafy winning gold in the U11 and Romina Rodriguez winning gold in U9. Antonella was runner-up in U13 with Hanna Hay taking the bronze also in U13.
Lia had a chat with Romina and Antonella afterwards to hear about how their tournaments went.
Lia: “What was your favourite thing/moment about the Alberta Junior Closed tournament?”
Romina: “My favourite part in Calgary was when I played with 5 people winning matches and losing 3, but because I was playing up an age category I was first place in girls U9. I was really excited to win and enjoyed playing so many new. Really, the fun part was that I got to play more. This is my 5th tournament and I like playing with all these new people.
Antonella: “My favourite part of the Alberta closed, is that I got second in girls under 13. I won 4 matches and lost 1. I got to the final and I was happy with my result because I did my best. I really liked the club that we played in, I liked the squash community and I was very happy to participate in this event.”
“Everybody did their best. I have not been playing competitively for the past 4 months because of my injury. I’m very happy with my result. I am training with my fabulous coach Ibrahim and the rest of the juniors here. I know that my sister did her best and I’m very proud of her because she also had a good tournament. I’m happy that the juniors in the ESC are getting more competitive and going to more tournaments. Because as we play with each other, we will get better!”
Well done everyone – we can’t wait to see how things go next year!
