Doubles News From Julie

With a new $30/month doubles membership available, Julie Multamaki and Jeff Williams are working on some new doubles programs. The latest update for the December Box league follows immediately below. For further information, please scroll further for the original post from Julie.

December play can officially start as early as this coming Monday (Nov 26), so you can start booking matches.
We have added 9 new teams to the ladder for December, which brings our total to 28 teams. Pretty good for starting with just 10 teams two months ago! I’m sure the ladder will continue to grow its numbers as more people find out about it.
There is a Google Sheet to manage all aspects of the doubles league. For access to it, you will have to contact either Julie or Aya
1. Ladder Contact List – You can make changes to this sheet if you need to update your contact info and comments. Everyone in the ladder will have access to this info so that they can easily contact you & your partner to set up matches. If you are new to the ladder, please be sure to update this area with your contact info and your vacation time etc, until the end of December.
2. Ladder – the list of teams and what rung they are on the ladder. This is for viewing only. Please do not make any changes to this worksheet. The committee will move teams up and down the ladder as matches are recorded on the court booking sheets. All new teams for December have been ranked and then placed, in order of rank, below the last team on the November ladder. This will be the process for all new teams each month (this doesn’t apply to teams who are sitting out a month or two due to vacation/injury/work commitments).
3. Pickup Matches – this is a new worksheet that has been created for players to put in their monthly availability in order to organize some pickup matches with other players (not necessarily with your team member).
4. Weekly Booking sheets (labelled by week for the next 6 weeks ending Dec 30). December (and remainder of November) Court Booking Sheets – courts have been blocked off on Mondays nights (varies), Thursday afternoon/evenings for 3 hours, plus Saturdays and Sundays for approx. 4 hours each day. Currently, there are 6 worksheets (1 for each week from this week until the end of December), so please make your court bookings on these worksheets if you are going to be using these specific times. You won’t need to write anything, just Click on each cell to get a drop-down menu. The court times are 1hr long. You will also record your results on these sheets (again click on the cell next to the winning team, to get the drop-down menu and select the relevant match score). If you accidentally click on a cell and put your name in a cell, then just click on the cell again and hit the “delete” key.
5. Results Sheets – Oct & Nov Results sheets are protected sheets. It’s where we keep the results from each month in case there are disputes about match scores or ladder positions. Any disputes about results need to be directed to Aya & I.
6. Data – Please do not make any changes to the data worksheet. This worksheet is for admin purposes only, as the data listed here is linked to the drop-down lists on the court booking sheets.
All the ladder rules are also listed on each court booking sheet. Please read and refer to the rules, and if for some reason I haven’t covered a situation then please feel free to contact me for a solution. Specifically, please refer to the rules on the sheets about how many rungs you can challenge above you.
It is your responsibility to book your own matches with other teams.
A reminder that if you don’t get a minimum of 2 matches played and recorded by the 25th day of each month, then you “lose” your $10 bucks (each), and you will need to cough up $10 more bucks (each) the next month you play.
If you play outside of the set court times listed, then you can email Aya & I the results – include the names of the opponents you played, the match score (3-1 etc), and the date played, OR, you can find a vacant spot on the weekly court sheet (nearest to when you played) and record the results there.
Thank you all so much for playing, supporting and promoting this ladder these past few months. It’s great to see doubles at the ESC finally take off. Please be sure to talk it up with other players, so that we can get more people playing doubles in the new year.

Sign up for the December Doubles Ladder

Sign up as a team, or as an individual and we will try to find you a partner. Teams can be comprised of same-sex, and/or mixed. Just let us know if you want in, and we will slot you into the ladder based on where the committee feels that you best fit. We ask that you & your partner be of a very similar playing level so that everyone gets competitive matches when they step on court.

What does it cost? $10 bucks from everyone up front – which will go into a windup function pot at the end of the season (April TBA). You need to complete 2 matches each month in order to “save” your original $10 bucks. If you fail to play 2 matches by the 25th day of each month, then your $10 will go into the “function” pot, and it will cost you each another $10 bucks to join the ladder the next month. You can play more than 2 matches each month if you want to get in more matches.

If you need to skip a month or two because you are busy with work or vacation – no worries – just let us know before the 29th day of each month so that we can take you out (and let us know by the 29th of each month if you need back in). Providing that you have fulfilled the 2-match requirement the previous month then your $10 bucks is still safe, and you won’t need to pay to get back in.

Players must be members of ESC. If you are currently a member of another club and want to play doubles at ESC, you will need to purchase the “NEW” Doubles only membership for $30/month (unlimited doubles play). Please contact the ESC for further details on this new membership for doubles players.

Register for the December Ladder by November 24th.

To register and for further information, please contact Julie Multamaki coachmultamki@gmail.com.

Here’s a brief list of the 4 news items, so you can skip to the section/s that interest you.

1. Doubles Ladder – starting October 1, 2018
2. “New” ESC Doubles Membership
3. Doubles Lessons with Jeff & Julie
4. Movement/Footwork Clinic with Julie

1. The ESC will be starting a Doubles Ladder at the beginning of October.
Jeff Williams, Pat Binns, Aya Okamoto and I will be trying to get this started for ESC members. If you are not an ESC member and want to play in this ladder then please read Section #2 regarding the new doubles ONLY membership. Teams can be comprised of same-sex, or mixed. Just let us know if you want in, and we will slot you into the ladder based on where the committee feels that you best fit. We ask that you & your partner be of a very similar playing level so that everyone gets competitive matches when they step on court, and it is fun for everyone.

At this point in time, you will be able to challenge teams up to 3 rungs ahead of you. If you win, you move 1 place above the team that you beat. If you lose to a team ranked ahead of you on the ladder then you stay where you are. As the numbers grow in the ladder then we will address a “rung challenge increase” as needed. We will block off 1-hour time slots on Thursdays evenings, Saturdays, and Sundays to complete ladder matches – and we will have a Google doc where you can book the court time for your match (as well as the contact info for everyone on the ladder). If for some reason you are unable to play on any of the above-mentioned days, then you can organize with your opponents to play on another time/day (you will need to make your own booking for that through the ESC club booking system). Matches will be best of 5. Further rules about determining a winner if the match is not completed within the hour will be sent out to teams prior to the start of the ladder.
If you need a partner, let us know, and we will find you one. If you already have a partner then let us know your team. Regardless, we need your name, contact phone number, email address, and if you are new to doubles then we will also need your level of play (ESL singles level or tournament singles level), so that we can place you in a competitive spot on the ladder. The $10 will be charged to your account once the ladder is finalized.
Register before September 28th. Please reply all to this email, so that Jeff, Pat, Aya and myself (all of our emails are in the cc section above) all get the information.

2. “New” ESC Doubles ONLY Membership.
In July, the ESC officially approved a doubles-only membership for the 2018/19 season. This is a great membership for those singles players from other clubs to play doubles on a regular basis.
Cost: $30/month or $300 annually, plus a $30 one-time fee for the fob
It gives you unlimited weekly doubles court bookings (maximum court booking of 1 court per day).
You will have full access into the facility from 5:00 AM to midnight (including the fitness room and lockers rooms), but no singles court privileges or free drop-in access. The ESC has started to take active measures to monitor courts and wil bill people with basic and doubles-only memberships who try to get extra court times during unstaffed hours.
Please sign up on the ESC website, https://ts2.clubinterconnect.com/edmonton/home/reportView.do?id=136&history=clear, or contact the club to purchase your membership.

3. Doubles & Singles Lessons. Jeff Williams & Julie Multamaki.
If you are new to doubles and are looking for some technical and strategical instruction throughout the week, then please do not hesitate to contact Jeff Williams jeff.williams@edmontonsquashclub.ca. If you are looking for weekend instruction then please contact Julie Multamakimultamaki@yahoo.com. Both Jeff and Julie also offer lessons for singles players. Please consult them on individual and group pricing.

4. Lunging, Ghosting and Movement Basics.
Julie Multamaki will be offering a 5-week Lunging, ghosting and movement basics clinic on Saturdays, from November 3-December 1, 2018, at the Edmonton Squash Club (ESC).
This clinic will be a great tune-up for those that want to work on improving their lunging, balance and movement on and off the ball. This program focuses on basic movement fundamentals (which many of us need) as well as movement patterns around the court. Plus, you’ll get a great cardio workout while you are doing this too!

5-week clinic Cost: Saturdays from November 3-December 1, 2018 (5 weeks)
Member Cost: $80.00 for 5 sessions
